In Memory of Virginia Trimble

November 14, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Virginia Trimble, a cherished advocate, volunteer, and friend to You Have the Power. Virginia’s commitment to empowering survivors and strengthening our community has left a profound and lasting impact on Nashville and on all of us who had the privilege of working alongside her. For many years, Virginia played an essential role in advancing You Have the Power’s mission through her advocacy, leadership, and unwavering compassion. She devoted countless hours to educating the community, supporting victims of crime, and elevating the importance of prevention and healing.

Fifty years ago, Nashville was shaken by the tragic murder of Virginia’s 9-year-old daughter, Marcia Trimble, who disappeared while delivering Girl Scout cookies. Over the many years it took for Marcia’s killer to be identified and convicted, we came to know Virginia not only as Marcia’s mother but as a woman of extraordinary strength and perseverance.

Many will remember her as a mother who never lost hope of finding justice. More than three decades after Marcia’s disappearance, advancements in DNA technology finally led to the arrest of the man responsible for her death and for other violent crimes committed during that time. Throughout those long years, Virginia remained a tireless advocate: steadfast, determined, and deeply committed to the truth.

Her dedication to victims of crime never wavered. “She acknowledged the pain and the loss, but what she did is turn that into making herself and our community stronger,” said Cathy Gurley, CEO of You Have the Power and longtime friend of Virginia.

In 2015, Gov. Bill Haslam and You Have the Power honored Virginia with the Powerhouse Award, recognizing her lifelong devotion to victims’ rights. Through her advocacy, she transformed personal tragedy into a source of strength and hope for countless others facing trauma and loss.

To those who knew her, Virginia was far more than a supporter; she was a guiding light, a steady voice, and a fierce champion for those who needed it most. Her influence runs deep within our organization.

Gurley reflected, “Through her involvement with You Have the Power, she turned her personal grief into a source of empowerment and hope, reminding all of us that even the deepest wounds can become a wellspring of strength.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Virginia’s family, friends, and all who loved her. May her memory be a blessing, and may we continue to honor her legacy through the work she held so dear.

Funeral arrangements are being made through Robertson County Funeral Home. The family plans to lay Virginia to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, beside her beloved daughter, Marcia.
