The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is introducing new divisions and branches that will jointly investigate crimes involving domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. Chief John Drake (a YHTP board member and longtime supporter) announced the organizational changes in a December 16 press conference.

Specifically, the MNPD has added an Interpersonal Crimes Branch to the department’s Investigative Services Bureau and created a Special Victims Division to investigate sex crimes and human trafficking.

“Our Domestic Violence and Youth Services detectives focus on crimes impacting family units, and their investigations often overlap,” Drake said in a press release announcing the new changes. “Placing these two components in the same MNPD Branch, along with the Special Victim Division, will foster greater communication between detectives and enhanced services for victims, both children and adults. With the Family Safety Center being adjacent to police headquarters, and our partnership with a number of victim support agencies, these new additions reflect Nashville’s commitment to be a national leader in supporting victims of family violence and sex crimes.”

Harmon Hunsicker, a 27-year Metro Police veteran, has been appointed as commander of the new Interpersonal Crimes Branch. He previously oversaw the Forensic Services Division based at MNPD’s crime lab. The new

Capt. Anthony McClain will head the Special Victims Division, overseeing lieutenant, two sergeants, and ten detectives. McClain, whose promotion a captain was also announced during this press conference, previously the Narcotics Unit in the Specialized Investigations Division.

You Have the Power thanks Chief Drake and the MNPD for these bold and innovative approaches to problems at the heart of YHTP’s mission. We look forward to our continued work with the MNPD to create safe and informed families and communities.
