YOU HAVE THE POWER Founder Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

December 6, 2021

Former First Lady of Tennessee Andrea Conte Honored for 30 Years of Human Rights Advocacy.

You Have the Power…Know How to Use It, Inc. (YHTP) is pleased to announce that YHTP founder and human rights advocate, Andrea Conte, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at Tennessee’s celebration of Human Rights Day event, held virtually on Dec 9, 2021 at 5:00pm CT. The event is organized by a collaborative of human rights organizations, nonprofits, and advocates, including the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, Metro Human Relations Commission, Tennessee United for Human Rights, the Church of Scientology, and others, who work together annually to plan the event.
Conte, a former nurse, healthcare professional, turned entrepreneur, was forever changed after becoming a victim of violence in 1988. Severely beaten yet undeterred, she fought off her attacker and managed to escape, and she’s been fighting for crime victims ever since. In addition to founding You Have the Power, Conte has contributed her time, talent, and resources to several initiatives to support victims and their families, including the Children’s Memorial Garden of Nashville and child advocacy centers. Tennessee now has over 45 child advocacy centers, a feat made possible through the work of many, including Ms. Conte, who completed a 605-mile walk across all 95 counties to raise awareness of the importance and need for child advocacy centers.
Former First Lady Conte currently serves on the boards for You Have the Power, Children’s Memory Garden of Nashville, Nashville Predators Foundation, and the Rosalie Conte Foundation, and has previously served on the Board of Trustees at Fisk University, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Juvenile Justice Reform Commission, and the Oasis Center.
Past receipts of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Rev. V. H. “Sonnye” Dixon and Ernest “Rip” Patton, Jr. (2020), Abby Rubenfeld and Rev. Edwin C. Sanders II (2019), and King Hollands and Dr. Blondell Strong Kimbrough (2018).
The event is free and open to the public. Beverly Watts, director of the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, will serve as master of ceremonies. Mel Fowler-Green, director of the Metro Human Relations Commission, will offer remarks, and David Plazas of the Tennessean will moderate a Q&A discussion with Zulfat Suara, a 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Service Award for Human Rights and first Muslim elected to Metro Council.
