YHTP’s Youth Impact Curriculum (YIC) is an intervention for at-risk youth and adults (ages 14-24). The course helps participants understand how their actions affect others. In the process, it helps them understand the role victimization has played in their own lives. The ultimate goal is helping them commit to better decisions and changes in behavior.

In an eight-week series of 90-minute interactive workshops, young people learn to take responsibility for their actions and their effects on others. They develop a sense of accountability and build a plan for their future. The workshops also address specific Adverse Childhood Experiences (i.e. domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse) that contribute to juvenile offender behavior and later-life crime. Two co-facilitators lead each workshop. Pre- and post-surveys track increases in behavioral awareness.

Youth Impact Curriculum training
Participants in a Youth Impact Curriculum facilitator training participate in an interactive exercise, using art supplies to depict their understanding of the ideal teacher. During these train-the-trainer sessions, facilitators review curriculum protocols, learn how to engage participating youth, and roleplay through some of the course activities.

YHTP modeled YIC on YHTP’s highly successful Victim Impact Curriculum, which it presents to offenders and parolees within state prisons on behalf of the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDC). Like the Victim Impact Curriculum, YIC operates within the concept of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Change the way people think and we change the way the act. Help people find ways to deal with problems non-violently, and they will use them.

Area schools, community centers, and detention facilities can request YHTP staff members or volunteers to present the program, or they can present it on their behalf. The Hope Center at Grace is currently deploying YIC within Memphis City Schools as an alternative to out-of-school suspension, and YHTP is actively seeking other interested school districts across Tennessee.

We worked with TDC and multiple other agencies and child-serving professionals to adapt the fundamentals of the existing program. We actively collaborate with all of them to offer it to educators, professionals, and community leaders across Middle Tennessee and beyond:

  • the Tennessee Department of Children Services
  • the Davidson County Juvenile Court
  • Metro Nashville Public Schools
  • the Office of the District Attorney for the 20th Judicial District of Tennessee
  • the Sexual Assault Center
  • the Oasis Center
