What does You Have the Power do?

You Have the Power is a nonprofit that empowers those victimized by crime through education, advocacy, and understanding. We provide crime victims with information on what to do, where to go next, what support systems can do, what community services are available, and what justice options are available.

Also, we educate the public to build awareness, understanding, and decrease risk factors. Our free resource guides and community presentations explain how crime happens, provide guidance on identifying dangerous situations, and what to do if it affects you or the people you know.

But crime prevention doesn’t stop with current and potential victims. Our Victim Impact Curriculum helps offenders and parolees understand the impact of what they did, why they did it in the first place, and make better choices in the future. This curriculum also inspired a Youth Impact Curriculum for at-risk youth to keep them from committing serious offenses later.

What resource guides are available?

Operations Manager Darlene Willams provides information about our resource guides during the Opportunity Now Summer Showcase on July 12, 2019.

Our full collection of resource guides is available for free download in the Resources section of our Online Shop. They’re updated on a regular basis and some of them are available in Spanish (with other languages scheduled for translation).

Every year we provide thousands of hard copies of these free guides to hospitals, child advocacy centers, schools, colleges, churches, and community groups. Which subjects do you cover in your presentations?

Current presentations we offer include:

What does a You Have the Power presentation look like?
Volunteer facilitator
Volunteer facilitator Bijal Mehta presents information on sex trafficking to high schoolers at Beech Senior High School in Hendersonville on February 15, 2019.

A typical presentation includes clips from one of our documentaries on the issue, a PowerPoint discussion led by a guest facilitator, and a Q&A session. We welcome the inclusion of local group leaders (clergy, counselors, resident advisors, Title IX coordinators, etc.) who can provide the audience with additional perspectives and customized information.  Additionally, we use interactive elements to engage the audience throughout the presentation.

Our presentations usually run 90 minutes, but we can scale them down to 45-60 minutes to meet the scheduling needs of your group.  We will work with your point-of-contact to tailor the information and content to your group as well.

What documentaries are available?

In addition to our resource guides, You Have the Power also offers original documentaries incorporating victim and law enforcement perspectives on topics like sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. The full listing of available documentaries is available in YHTP’s Online Shop.  Additionally, YHTP has several short vignettes on domestic violence available on our YouTube Channel.

Do your presentations, documentaries, etc., cost anything?

Many of our presentations are free, underwritten by grants or donations. However, some groups underwrite the presentations themselves. Please use the contact form to the right or call (615-292-7027) our office for more information.

The resource guides are free if picked up from our office or delivered. We can also mail the guides to you, although we do charge a small fee (usually between $10-30) to cover shipping costs. The fee varies depending on how many guides you ask for and how far we have to send them. We always use the cheapest available postage rate to keep those costs low.

Pricing for documentaries is available in our Online Shop.

How does someone book a presentation with us?

Scheduling a presentation is as simple as calling us at (615) 292-7027 to set up an introductory meeting or requesting a training on our online shop. You can also complete the “Contact Us” form to the right.  We’ll talk with you about the kind of presentation you want and what dates you have available, and schedule a trained facilitator for the session.

I’d like to volunteer with YHTP. Where do I start?

We’re always looking for people who can help us with our presentations and special events. Check out our Volunteer Information Page or Volunteer Handbook March 2020 for details!

Where does your funding come from?

While we occasionally charge for community training sessions, most of our funding comes from government and community grants, as well as corporate and private donations.

Additionally, YHTP stages two signature fundraising events each year:

  • At our Powerhouse Award Luncheon in April, we honor a community member who has uniquely contributed to crime prevention and education in Tennessee.
Our “Powerfully Thankful” event includes a dinner, a silent auction, and a live concert featuring local singer/songwriters.
How can I donate to YHTP?

We accept donations by PayPal, credit card, or check. Full details are on the donation page of our website.

Since YHTP is a 501(c)3 non-profit, your gift to us is tax-deductible.

Where is my donation going? How will my financial gift be used?

Donations help cover the printing and shipping costs of resource guides, subsidize the participation of at-risk youth in our Youth Impact Curriculum, and allow us to provide more community presentations to the public.

Are you on social media?

You can follow us on FacebookTwitterLinkedIn, YouTube and/or Instagram for updates on YHTP projects, as well as articles and materials addressing the subjects we cover.
